Composé en 1745 et inspirée du neuvième livre des Métamorphoses d’Ovide, Hercules fait partie des dernières œuvres d’Haendel.
Monument de la tragédie grecque Les Trachiniennes de Sophocle immortalise le drame intemporel de la jalousie conjugale. Hercule revient du siège d’Oechalie avec une otage de guerre, la jeune Iole. Face à la belle prisonnière, Déjanire, épouse du héros, est poussée par la jalousie à commettre l’irréparable : tuer l’invincible Hercule avec la tunique empoisonnée du centaure Nessos. Cette intrigue a inspiré à George Friedrich Händel une partition d’une grande inventivité qu’il a créée en 1745 à Londres en version concertante. Boudée à la création par le public londonien accoutumé aux oratorios, cette tragédie en musique contient certains des morceaux les plus innovants de Händel, par exemple le choeur « Jealousy infernal pest ». Opera Fuoco et David Stern s’associent au Chœur de Namur et s’inscrivent avec cet opéra dans la grande fête des Jeux Olympiques de Paris 2024 en célébrant le plus grand des héros de la mythologie gréco-romaine.
